Nürnberg

Germany
Picture
In the Middle Ages, Nürnberg was one of Europe’s most important trading and political centres and later became a centre of Industrialisation in Germany. In the 1920s, National Socialism took hold early in Nürnberg. From 1927 onwards, the National Socialist party rallies were held in Nürnberg. It was in Nürnberg that the Nazi party announced a set of anti-Semitic and racist laws in 1935 that paved the way to the Holocaust, later known as the Nuremberg Laws. In the aftermath of the Second World War, from 1945 to 1949, the Nuremberg Trials were held in the city. After 1945, Nürnberg slowly developed a new perception of itself as a city representing peace and the defence of human rights. Romanticized nostalgia for the Middle Ages and coming to terms with the atrocities perpetrated by National Socialism shape the city`s image and identity until today.
