Eleusis

Greece
Picture
The place where Attica, from antiquity, drew knowledge and prosperity.

One of the most important religious centres of the ancient world, the site of the enactment of the Eleusinian Mysteries. The most fertile plain of ancient Attica where, according to the traditional myth of Demeter, agriculture first developed. In modern times a center of heavy industry, the productive steam engine of Greece.
A city of 30,000 inhabitants which produced 30% of the Greek GNP, leaving behind, however, regrettable evidence of the harsh exploitation of the local environment.
Today and on the occasion of Eleusis having been chosen as European Capital of Culture 2023, Eleusis is undergoing a great revival and transformation, claiming its identity in the post-industrial era.
