Description of the city
Zagreb's streets and local beat are permeated by past influences of the Roman, Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires, mixed in with socialist ideas of a more balanced and people-centered way of life, and hurt by the 90s war. Nestled between Sava river and the 1000 m-high Medvednica mountain, its history, parks, and cultural scene (surviving despite cutbacks) offers a high quality of life for many, but not all. Efforts are ongoing to designate the Croatian capital as a sanctuary city without deportations and detention centers for those forced to seek a better life. The city of nearly one million inspires, nourishes, challenges, never fails to surprise.
Description of the partner
Živi Atelje DK (Living Atelier DK) is an independent, interdisciplinary, non-governmental and non-profit organization that uses art for exploration of identity, healing and community-building. We have several programs including the No Borders Program, (Women to Women Collective and No Borders: Integration of Art – Art of integration), Wandering Art Tea Academy, Creative Collective Space and Gallery DK (glassblowing, storytelling, ceramics, cyanotype and artist in residence) and a project to preserve and promote the art of Vera Dajht-Kralj, whose atelier, her artistic and spiritual heritage, is the focal point for all our activities. We consider integration to be a two-way process in which all have to integrate in this ever-changing, dynamic society created by peoples of different origins and world views.
