The Istrian area is divided among three countries - Slovenia, Italy, and Croatia. For centuries local inhabitants have been struggling with borders. Yet the Istrian peninsula is geographically united. Since the Sixth Century at least three different cultures and four languages have coexisted in this territory. Istria offers an example of how different cultures have survived, coexisted and profited together. With the ECoC candidacy for 2025, the interconnectedness of the area and its communities has brought to the forefront new challenges. A Wave of Change embraced the cities starting from Piran the candidate city, enhancing new way to act. Our city has an impressive past and it is a small jewel from a perspective of it’s cultural heritage.
And look what happens today: due to COVID-19 borders have come up again! Diseases, like many other natural phenomena, do not acknowledge any borders.
Piran was a candidate city for the European Capital of Culture 2026.
